Rest Is Holy: What the Bible Says About Slowing Down

As a holistic wellness coach focusing on mind, body, and spirit, I talk a lot about movement—but today, I want to talk about something just as important: rest.

We live in a culture that glorifies hustle and constant productivity. But God’s Word reminds us that rest isn’t laziness—it’s necessary, it’s healthy, and it’s holy.

Let these verses encourage you to pause, breathe, and remember that rest is part of wellness, too.

God Himself Rested

Genesis 2:2-3 (NLT)On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation.

From the very beginning of creation, God modeled rest. If the Creator of the universe made time to rest, we can, too. He even blessed that day and made it holy. That tells me rest isn’t optional—it’s part of a healthy rhythm.

Jesus Invites You to Rest

Matthew 11:28 (NLT)Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”

This one speaks straight to the heart. If you’re tired—physically, mentally, emotionally—Jesus is inviting you to come to Him and receive rest. Real rest. The kind that restores from the inside out.

Your Spirit Needs Stillness

Psalm 23:1-2 (NLT)The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams.

Rest isn’t just about sleep or taking a break—it’s about being still in God’s presence. He leads us to quiet waters on purpose. Stillness is where we get refreshed.

You Were Made to Rest, Too

Exodus 20:9-10 (NLT)You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the Lord your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you.

God gave us a rhythm for work and rest. Taking a Sabbath isn’t just a suggestion—it’s a command meant to keep us healthy and connected to Him. It’s permission to stop and rest.

Quiet Time Is Where Strength Grows

Isaiah 30:15 (NLT)This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: “Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quietness and confidence is your strength. But you would have none of it.”

True strength isn’t always about lifting heavy or pushing hard. Sometimes, the strongest thing you can do is rest, reflect, and trust.

Your Rest Is Worship

Rest doesn’t have to mean inactivity—it means intentional restoration. A slow walk, a nap, prayer time, a journaling session, or simply saying no to something when your plate is full.

Rest is where God meets us. It’s where our strength is renewed, our minds are reset, and our spirits are refreshed.

So if you’re feeling worn down or stretched thin, this is your gentle reminder: you’re allowed to rest. Not because you’ve earned it, but because you were created for it.

In wellness and grace,
