In honor of Women's History Month, we are highlighting influential women in the Bible whose stories continue to inspire us today. One such woman is Tabitha, also known as Dorcas, a disciple mentioned in the book of Acts. Though her story spans only a few verses, her impact on her community and the example of faith she set were significant. Below, we will walk through the passage about her life and summarize its meaning.
There was a believer in Joppa named Tabitha (which in Greek is Dorcas). She was always doing kind things for others and helping the poor. — Acts 9:36 (NLT)
Tabitha was known for her acts of charity and service. She wasn’t just a believer in name—her faith was evident through her generosity. Her kindness and dedication to helping the less fortunate made her beloved in her community.
About this time she became ill and died. Her body was washed for burial and laid in an upstairs room. But the believers had heard that Peter was nearby at Lydda, so they sent two men to beg him, “Please come as soon as possible!” — Acts 9:37-38 (NLT)
Tragedy struck when Tabitha fell sick and passed away. Believers acted urgently to seek Peter, one of Jesus’ disciples. They had faith that something miraculous could still happen.
So Peter returned with them; and as soon as he arrived, they took him to the upstairs room. The room was filled with widows who were weeping and showing him the coats and other clothes Dorcas had made for them.— Acts 9:39 (NLT)
This verse highlights the personal impact of Tabitha’s work. The widows, who were among the most vulnerable in society, showed Peter the garments she had made for them. These tangible expressions of her kindness demonstrated how much she had cared for those in need.
But Peter asked them all to leave the room; then he knelt and prayed. Turning to the body he said, “Get up, Tabitha.” And she opened her eyes! When she saw Peter, she sat up! — Acts 9:40 (NLT)
In a moment of divine intervention, Peter prayed, and God restored Tabitha to life.
He gave her his hand and helped her up. Then he called in the widows and all the believers, and he presented her to them alive. The news spread through the whole town, and many believed in the Lord. — Acts 9:41-42 (NLT)
Tabitha’s resurrection wasn’t just a blessing for her loved ones—it became a testimony that led many others to faith in Christ.
The Legacy of Tabitha
Though Tabitha’s story is brief, her life speaks volumes about the power of kindness, faith, and generosity. She lived in a way that reflected God’s love, and even after death, her legacy continued to bring people to Christ.
As we celebrate Women's History Month, may we be inspired by Tabitha’s example—serving others with a heart full of love and making a difference in the lives of those around us.
How will you serve others today?
