What’s the point of racing?

Do you ever feel nervous or anxious? As the fall air rolls, running races are in full swing. Racing is often seen as a means to an end. The pattern starts with small funs runs for exercise, then moving into bigger goals such as racing in races such as a 5K, 10K, half, or full marathon. However, if you haven’t set a goal maybe it’s time to give an event a chance. The feeling you get at the end of a race is indescribable. You will feel accomplished for meeting your goal but also be able to set your next goal. After my first marathon, I was hooked. I couldn’t wait to set my next race. So, how does this all relate to being nervous or anxious? Well, racing makes me extremely nervous. Every time I step up to the line, I feel the butterflies and shake just a little. However, what I have come to understand is that it’s all part of the process. Most importantly, the benefits of training and finishing a race outweigh my nervousness every time! In fact, I find that running, in general, makes me a less anxious person, just another benefit to the sport.
