Vitamin C Serum

Hello, Gorgeous!

As I’ve mentioned in a previous post, using a quality Vitamin C serum is one of the most important skin care products you can use to fight off signs of aging. It is a true powerhouse! But I’ll be honest, a quality, medical-grade Vitamin C serum is expensive. In fact, it’ll probably be the most expensive serum in your arsenal of skincare. Vitamin C, otherwise known as L-ascorbic acid, protects your skin from free radicals that break down collagen and elastin. A break down of collagen and elastin= wrinkles…and nobody wants those! Vitamin C does a lot of other wonderful things for our skin too! It’s hydrating, it brightens our complexion, if you’re prone to redness, it helps even out your skin tone and over-time, it will help fade brown spots.

Now let’s get into why it’s so expensive and why you should be using a medical-grade product. Vitamin C, in its purest form, is a very unstable molecule. What this means is that it needs to be formulated at a precise pH and balanced with proper ingredients such as Vitamin E and/or Ferulic Acid. Without the proper pH, our acidic skin will not allow those over-the-counter products to penetrate into the deeper layers of skin. Another important difference is the degradation of over-the-counter products. They simply are not formulated to maintain their potency over the life of the product.

In the long run, by using a sub-par Vitamin C serum, you not only will be wasting your money but you will also never reap the full potential of your skin. There are many over-the-counter products that are fine to use but Vitamin C is not one of them. Do yourself a favor and invest in a medical grade Vitamin C, found at doctors office, not a big box store. Your best bet, have your skin evaluated by a skincare professional to find the right Vitamin C for you. Many offer a free consultation and can point you in the right direction.
