Milia

Hello Gorgeous!

Have you ever developed what looks like a bump on your face and it has a white head, similar to a pimple? Maybe you’ve tried to squeeze it and no matter what you do, that little white bump will not go away. Then several weeks, or for some, several months go by and suddenly that little bump is no longer there. My guess is you are probably experiencing what’s called milia. Perhaps you’ve seen them on babies too. We used to call them “milk bumps”. But adults can get them too.

Milia is a build of dead skin cells, or keratin, that get trapped under the skin. As we age our skin cell turnover begins to slow down and with that lack of turnover, the dead skin gets trapped. Milia can also occur if we are using the incorrect products for our skin type, like too heavy of a moisturizer, for example. Sun damage is another cause. They aren’t harmful; but women, in particular, find them most annoying because they look like tiny pimples.

If you are prone to milia it will be challenging to totally prevent them. However, there are some ways to combat milia: exfoliate regularly, use a topical retinol, use sunscreen, and have a consultation with a skincare professional to ensure you are using the correct skincare products for your skin.

Milia will eventually exfoliate out on their own but it may take a long time…weeks or months. A skincare professional can extract them if they are close enough to the surface to extract without causing trauma to the skin. Whatever you do…do not squeeze them! Trust me, they will not squeeze out like a pimple and you can damage your skin by squeezing them. Leave it to a professional to extract them.
