Hello Gorgeous!
How many of you have been tempted to buy a jade roller? You’ve seen the claims that jade rollers will help with lymphatic drainage, decrease puffiness, boost collagen and elastin production, improve fine lines and wrinkles, and increase penetration of skincare products. Those are some grand claims, if you ask me. But does the jade roller hold up to the hype?
After doing extensive research, I have been unable to find any scientific studies that support the claimed benefits of jade rollers. Our bodies do not really need help with lymphatic drainage, as it does this on it’s own. And boosting collagen and elastin….hmm, that one does not even remotely make sense to me, scientifically speaking. Nor does improving fine lines and wrinkles. Could it increase the penetration of skincare products? Maybe. It’s just not been proven.
All that being said, I also don’t see that there is any harm in using a jade roller. Actually, I think that facial massage with a jade roller, or without, feels really good! One benefit I can see of massaging the face with a jade roller is that it may really help those that suffer from TMJ or those that clench their teeth at night. Massaging that area with a jade roller may help by easing the muscle tension in their jaw.
We also know that facial massage does indeed help with increased circulation. In theory, this should help with puffiness. The coolness of the jade roller is probably very soothing too. Is it necessary to spend money on a jade roller to help with puffiness though? When I was a teenager, the trick to help with under eye puffiness was to keep a spoon in the fridge and place it under the eyes to decrease puffiness. Did it work…eh, maybe a little but it’s certainly a cheaper alternative considering that jade rollers can run upward of $50! A better way to decrease facial puffiness… sleep on your back with your head slightly elevated. I trained myself to do this a few years ago and I no longer wake up with puffiness under my eyes. I had a few sleepless nights but I’m so happy that I made the switch.
Bottom line…you do you! If you like the way a jade roller feels, then I say go for it! We should all be doing things that make us feel good. I only caution you to not expect a great miracle.
